The German Back Pain Research Network (GBPRN)
Back pain is a very frequent health problem in most industrialized
societies with an enormous impact on the burden of disease and
costs to society. The transition from "simple" acute back pain
episodes to severe and chronic forms is not well understood,
efforts to prevent progression of back pain to a chronic
condition have only been partly successful.
The German Back Pain Research Network addresses important
research problems in order to fill in the gap between the
apparent relevance of this health problem and the currently
rather limited knowledge about its management.
At present 10 projects within the GBPRN are conducted in 10 German locations.
Projects of the network are assigned to one of three areas of
research: A - Epidemiology and health economics, B - Diagnostics,
classification, and determinants, and C - Prevention, therapy,
and rehabilitation. Two cross-sectional projects (Q) provide
administrative and coordination services or deal with
methodological research questions. In these studies, pathways
and determinants of the transition of back pain to chronicity
are beeing investigated on the population level, including the
psychosocial, sociomedical and health economic implications of
this transition. GBPRN projects develop and evaluate diagnostic and classification tools ranging from physiological markers to
feasible tests of functional performance. New and existing
treatment strategies are beeing evaluated in randomized clinical
trials in different settings including primary care, surgery,
psychological therapy, and rehabilitation.
The German Back Pain Research Network adopts a multidisciplinary
perspective and emphasizes cooperation and communication among
its members, with associated researchers, with external partners
and with patients. Transfer of knowledge and results to clinical
practice and the public is a key objective of its activities.

Q
|
|
Im Projektbereich Q sind Querschnittsprojekte angesiedelt, die sich der
fachlichen Koordination des Verbunds (Q1) oder der Untersuchung spezieller
Techniken der “elektronischen” Befragung von Patienten widmen (Q2).
|
|
A
|
|
|
|
C
|
|
Schließlich wird im Projektbereich C die Wirksamkeit
verschiedener Therapieverfahren in der primärärztlichen Versorgung (C1), der
psychosozialen Intervention (C2), der medizinischen Rehabilitation (C3) und der
chirurgischen Behandlung (C4) erforscht.
